Al-Shifa Trust is set to construct a state-of-the-art eye hospital in Gilgit. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 27, 2024 to mark the commencement of construction for the new hospital that will serve over 1.8 million people across 14 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, providing free, high-quality eye care services to the region.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Mr. Gulbar Khan. Maj Gen (Retd) Rehmat Khan, President Al-Shifa Trust, Mr. Nasruddin Rupani, Chairman of the Rupani Founda- tion, Maj Gen Kashif Khalil, Force Commander FCNA, trustees and senior management of Al-Shifa Trust, local notables, and donor representatives also graced the ceremony with their esteemed presence.
Al-Shifa Trust is committed to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) being central to the vision for the new eye hospital in Gilgit.
Al-Shifa Trust has inaugurated an interim eye clinic near the construction site of its upcoming seventh eye hospital in Gilgit. The clinic, housed in a rented building, was officially opened on December 17, 2024. Health Minister of Gilgit, Raja Azam Khan performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The interim clinic aims to provide immediate access to comprehensive eye care services while construction of the permanent hospital, which began in July 2024, continues. The hospital is expected to be completed by June 2026. The ceremony was also attended by newly appointed doctors of Gilgit Hospital, representatives from Al-Shifa Trust and Rupani Foundation, senior government officials, and other distinguished guests. The clinic is now open, offering comprehensive eye care services to the community.
