Al-Shifa Eye Bank

An Introduction to Cornea Donation

It is estimated that about 2 million people are blindness in Pakistan. Out of which around 2 lac individuals suffer with diseases of cornea. The vision of such patients can be easily recovered through corneal transplant. Al-Shifa trust eye hospital is the biggest cornea transplanting Centre in Pakistan, where an estimated 800 corneas are transplanted annually. After transplant, patients can get their vision back again.

Since we do not have a national level eye banking system, therefore all the corneas are imported from abroad. The supply cannot match the huge demand for corneal transplantation. To address the shortage of corneal tissue Al-Shifa trust eye hospital has established an advanced eye bank in Rawalpindi Pakistan, where people can submit their will for donating cornea.

To donate your cornea/eyes after death is a noble gesture, which can bring light to blind person’s life.

How can you donate Cornea?

Any person desirous of donating his/her cornea has to submit a will form which contains all necessary information about the person. Donor will be given a card which he/she must carry all the time. The person submitting the will form is also requested to inform his/her relatives about his/her will to donate cornea so that relatives can inform the hospital about the death of such a person and also no objection is raised by the relatives in such a case.

Once the hospital receives the information from the agreed relatives of the dead donor, a medical team is sent to take the cornea with due reverence and care. The donor cornea is then grafted to the waiting blind patient.

One can donate sight and distribute happiness even after one's death!
