Al Shifa Eye Trust Hospital is privileged to be the Pioneer in establishing the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus for the first time in Pakistan in 1992. The Division of Pediatric ophthalmology exclusively deals with eye problems of children up to 15 years of age. Presently, our department is one of its kind in Pakistan. The pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus division is well equipped and a state-of-the-art treatment facility in Pakistan.

The Department has fully equipped nine clinics, two orthoptic clinics, two refraction rooms, three vision assessment rooms for preverbal and verbal children,fellow’s room, diagnostic room, play area for children and a huge waiting area for 500 people. The Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi is a center of excellence for training in pediatric ophthalmology in the country and the region. We have one year structured clinical fellowship program in Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. We also have short term observership training programs. The department has all the allied components of pediatric eye care including pediatric optometry, orthoptic and low vision clinics. We have two operating days in a week. The Anesthesia department has expertise and latest technology to induce general anesthesia to neonates, infants, toddlers and older children. On average 22 pediatric eye surgeries are performed in a day. Our faculty members have extensive experience in dealing with complicated strabismus cases, vertical and oblique muscle surgery and adjustable suture strabismus surgery. The department of Pediatric ophthalmology has the privilege to use Artisan iris fixated intraocular lens in children with subluxated lenses for the first time in Pakistan. Our Department is Pioneer in introducing Retinopathy of Prematurity screening service in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. A large number of patients with pediatric glaucoma, cataract and retinoblastoma are referred to our referral center from different areas of our country and Afghanistan. Our pediatric ophthalmologists are experienced in dealing withall kind of pediatric eye diseases.

Our department is actively involved in research. We have published many papers in national and international journals. Presently, we are engaged in multiple research projects in collaboration with ocular genetics department of McGill University, Canada and research institute of Netherlands.
