Retinopathy of Prematurity Screening Services
ROP Screening Team
The Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screening Service is offered to premature and/or low birth babies for Retinopathy of Prematurity screening. ROP is a pathologic process that occurs only in immature retinal tissue and can progress to a tractional retinal detachment, which can result in functional or complete blindness.Babies who are born prematurely still have a growing retina. The retina will take longer to fully grow after birth. During the course of this longer than normal growth period after birth, the retinal blood vessels can develop ROP. The sequential nature of ROP creates a requirement that at-risk preterm infants be examined by an ophthalmologist who is experienced in the examination of preterm infants for ROP at proper times to detect the changes of ROP before they become permanently destructive
The Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital is privileged to be pioneer in introducing Retinopathy of prematurity Screening services in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Prof. Dr. Sorath Noorani Siddiqui has experience of ROP screening from Canada and DrAsad Ali from the United Kingdom. The trained team of pediatric ophthalmologists visits the neonatal intensive care units of various private and public sector hospitals to screen the premature babies for ROP. Currently, the services are being provided to Fauji Foundation Hospital, Military hospital. Combined Military Hospital and Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad. We have designed an informative leaflet with the contact info for the parents to book their follow up visits in ROP clinic at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.
