Department of Glaucoma

Prof. Dr. Farah Akhtar (Head Of Department)
Dr. Mahmood Ali
Dr. Kh Naeem Akhtar

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Early detection and treatment of the disease can prevent permanent vision loss resulting from it however wrong diagnosis of this potentially blinding condition based on mere suspicion can expose a person to side effects related to treatment as well as psychological stress to him and his family. Detection and treatment of glaucoma thus demands a careful history taking, thorough clinical assessment and use of appropriate diagnostic tests.

Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital has a fully functional and dedicated glaucoma clinic where consultations are done four days a week while two days are reserved for operations. So far more than 10 thousand patients are registered in the clinic which includes both the glaucoma cases and glaucoma suspects.

The clinic is headed by Prof. Dr. Farah Akhtar who has a vast experience in the management of glaucoma. She has got training in Glaucoma from Eye and Ear infirmary New York USA. She is an approved supervisor for the post graduate training in Ophthalmology and is actively involved in the supervision of Trainees in Pakistan as well as Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. She has more than 25 research articles in her credit published in various national as well as international journals. In addition she has also been involved as clinical collaborator for research with COMSATS.

Dr. Mahmood Ali has done his fellowship in Ophthalmology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Royal College of Surgeons UK and International council of Ophthalmology UK after which he completed one year clinical fellowship in Glaucoma under the able guidance of Prof. Dr. Farah Akhtar.
