![]() Faculty Prof. Dr. Sumaira Altaf (Head Of Department) Al Shifa Eye Trust Hospital is privileged to be the Pioneer in establishing the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus for the first time in Pakistan in 1992. The Division of Pediatric ophthalmology exclusively deals with eye problems of children up to 15 years of age. Presently, our department is one of its kind in Pakistan. The pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus division is well equipped and a state-of-the-art treatment facility in Pakistan.
The Department has fully equipped nine clinics, two orthoptic clinics, two refraction rooms, three vision assessment rooms for preverbal and verbal children,fellow’s room, diagnostic room, play area for children and a huge waiting area for 500 people. The Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi is a center of excellence for training in pediatric ophthalmology in the country and the region. We have one year structured clinical fellowship program in Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. We also have short term observership training programs. The department has all the allied components of pediatric eye care including pediatric optometry, orthoptic and low vision clinics. Our department is actively involved in research. We have published many papers in national and international journals. Presently, we are engaged in multiple research projects in collaboration with ocular genetics department of McGill University, Canada and research institute of Netherlands. Department of Vitreo-Retina
![]() Faculty Prof. Dr. Nadeem Qureshi (Head Of Department / Chief Consultant) Retina Department is established since 1992. This department is currently supervised by Prof. Dr. Nadeem Qureshi. The department is equipped with most modern and state of the art diagnostic, medical and surgical treatments. Our Faculty of highly professional and qualified retinal specialists has got vast experience in dealing with all sorts of retinal pathologies. Retina department is also well supported by dedicated paramedical staff. It is centre of excellence for retinal diseases in Pakistan. OPD/OT Days

Department of Cornea and Refractive Surgery
![]() Deals with complicated eye diseases of Cornea and anterior segment of eye. Prof. Dr. Wajid Ali Khan is the head of the department. He is also the Chief of Medical Services of the Trust. He is specially known for his work in corneal grafting. Most modern equipment like Confocal Microscope, CCL-Technology, Topography, and Specular Microscope etc. are available. Modern treatment facilities like use Amniotic Membrane Transplant, Corneal Cross-linking, etc. are regular features of this department ![]() Prof. Dr. M. Abdul Moqeet Khan is Consultant at the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Department and In-charge of Anterior Segment Division (Division Leader). He is also Director of National Academy of Paramedics, which is the training wing for paramedics at Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology. He has vast experience in dealing with eye diseases in general and particularly of cornea and ocular surface.
Department of Orbit and Oculoplastics
![]() Deals with tumors of eye, reconstruction of birth defects and defects due to trauma all of which involve modern plastic surgical techniques. Prof. Dr. Tayyab Afghani is the head of the department who is a leading Oculoplastic Surgeon of the country with special interest in diseases of the orbit. Modern treatment facilities like use of Inj Botox, cosmetic eye surgery, artificial eye replacement etc. are available.
Department of Glaucoma
![]() Faculty Prof. Dr. Farah Akhtar (Head Of Department)Dr. Mahmood Ali Dr. Kh Naeem Akhtar Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Early detection and treatment of the disease can prevent permanent vision loss resulting from it however wrong diagnosis of this potentially blinding condition based on mere suspicion can expose a person to side effects related to treatment as well as psychological stress to him and his family. Detection and treatment of glaucoma thus demands a careful history taking, thorough clinical assessment and use of appropriate diagnostic tests. Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital has a fully functional and dedicated glaucoma clinic where consultations are done four days a week while two days are reserved for operations. So far more than 10 thousand patients are registered in the clinic which includes both the glaucoma cases and glaucoma suspects. The clinic is headed by Prof. Dr. Farah Akhtar who has a vast experience in the management of glaucoma. She has got training in Glaucoma from Eye and Ear infirmary New York USA. She is an approved supervisor for the post graduate training in Ophthalmology and is actively involved in the supervision of Trainees in Pakistan as well as Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. She has more than 25 research articles in her credit published in various national as well as international journals. In addition she has also been involved as clinical collaborator for research with COMSATS. ![]() Dr. Mahmood Ali has done his fellowship in Ophthalmology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Royal College of Surgeons UK and International council of Ophthalmology UK after which he completed one year clinical fellowship in Glaucoma under the able guidance of Prof. Dr. Farah Akhtar.
